Meaning of Kung Fu

Kung Fu or Gong Fu or Gung Fu (功夫) is a Chinese term often used in the west to refer to Chinese martial arts. Its original meaning is somewhat different, referring to one's expertise in any skill achieved through hard work and practice, not necessarily martial.

In its original meaning, Kung Fu can refer to any skill. Gong Fu (功夫) is a compound of two words, combining 功 (Gong) meaning "achievement" or "merit", and 夫 (Fu) which translates into "human", so that a literal rendering would be "human achievement".

Originally, to practice kung fu did not just mean to practice Chinese martial arts. Instead, it referred to the process of one's training - the strengthening of the body and the mind, the learning and the perfection of one's skills - rather than to what was being trained. It refers to excellence achieved through long practice in any endeavour. You can say that a person's kung fu is good in cooking, or that someone has kung fu in calligraphy; saying that a person possesses kung fu in an area implies skill in that area, which they have worked hard to develop. Someone with "bad kung fu" simply has not put enough time and effort into training, or seems to lack the motivation to do so.

Kung Fu refers to all Chinese martial arts. There are four main pillars in Chinese Martial arts. Each art can be classified as internal (soft) or external (hard) art.

1. 太极 Taichi or Taiji (internal)
2. 八卦 Bagua (internal)
3. 少林 Shaolin (external)
4. 形意 Xingyi (internal)

This does not mean only train internal or external. All Chinese martial arts train both internal and external. e.g Tai Chi is internal art (soft) instead of using force against force, Tai Chi redirect forces. Internal art also known as Qigong or Chigong.

A common saying concerning basic training in Chinese martial arts is as follows:

内外相合,外重手眼身法步,内修心神意气力。

This can be translated as:

Train both Internal and External. External training includes the hands, the eyes, the body and stances. Internal training includes the heart, the mind, the spirit and strength.

Each pillar has many branches and styles. E.g Wing Chun, Hung Gar, Praying Mantis, White Crane and etc… they all originated from Shaolin. As well as many Japanese and Korean martial arts.

At Kung Fu Fitness we teach a wide range of Chinese Martial Arts, that’s why we call Kung Fu Fitness!
In addition we also offer Burmese Martial Arts. Combat Bando and Yoga.

New Year's Resolutions!

The Christmas season is a time for New Year's resolutions. Have you achieved last year resolutions? People make them and break them every year. It doesn't have to be that way for you, however, if you keep in mind that a New Year's resolution is no different from any other personal goal. Change your diet...

Review from Healthy for Men Magazine

The inner rewards of martial arts

After three week of regular martial arts training, practitioners will have improvements in blood sugar and pressures, as well as calcium metabolism.

These changes translate into better functioning of the body and brain, and overall risk reduction for such diseases as hypertension, diabetes, heart and respiratory diseases, osteoporosis, anxiety, depression and some cancers.

Martial arts also bring about remarkable change in brain chemistry. Higher levels of serotonin, endorphins and dopamine have been recorded following training.

These will boost moods and increase self-confidence. Those who use the right side of their brain are likely to be better at martial arts as they have superior spatial perception. Aldrich Sawbwa, founder of Kung Fu Fitness, explains: ‘In terms of mental strength, everything we do in life requires self-confidence. By controlling balance and power in martial arts, we learn to control anger. If you can’t focus you can’t see and then you get hit, which is why martial arts are a way of meditation. Even with small amounts of practice you’ll find beneficial effects to mind and body’.

BBC DOCUMENTARY SEEKS BRITISH CHINESE FAMILIES

BBC Documentaries are making a 60' film for BBC Two about contemporary British family life. We are looking for families who are about to embark upon a journey together this summer. This would probably be a family holiday but I am also interested in any family making a substantial journey together over the coming months (At least 2-3 hours in the car to make it work). I am interested in including a British - Chinese family in the programme and would like to hear from anyone who might want to hear more at this stage.

In terms of the kind of people we are looking for, they need to be enthused by the idea of having a documentary made about them and to want to tell their stories! I think it will be a lasting document and intend to make it beautiful. We want to capture different aspects of British life. It is part of a unique documentary strand on the BBC whose reason for existing is to capture life as it is. The film will be a portrait of different types of families and I think that it would be wonderful to be able to portray a family of Chinese heritage who have chosen to live in Britain (whether they are first, second or third generation). We want to show some of the diversity of experiences that families have in the UK.

If you'd like to hear more about the project don't hesitate to email Marco Crivellari on marco.crivellari@bbc.co.uk or call him on 0208 008 2862

Source of the Water

In Chinese, we have a saying "Think of the source, when you drink the Water". In that way, you can enjoy and understand the full flavour of the water and learn to respect each others.

I have met many so called "Martial Artists" my art is better than your Kung Fu and etc...

Any serious Martial Artist would have studied the founder martial art background in his or her chosen art.

Because by drinking Japanese or Korean or Thai water, it does not mean that water source didn't pass through or even came from China.

China never claim all martial arts are originated from China, but there is facts that many systems are either direct or indirectly influenced by Chinese over 5000 years old system. (As a matter of facts, China civilization has indeed influenced many system around the world, not just in Martial Arts).

Of course, through evolution of Martial Arts system many has added local falvour or some even became unique system. That is the beauty of Martial Arts evolution.

So next time before you challenge other arts, you have to find out your source first. And also which Kung Fu system, because there are hundred of Kung Fu Systems.

Anthropologist claim we are all children of africa, what do you think?

Formula 1 and Martial Arts

Many students have asked me is this martial art system is better than this one or that one?

In order to win in Formula 1, Racing driver depend on a smashing Car, So does car depend on a smashing driver. If a racing driver lose the race do you blame the car or driver or both. e.g BMW, Ferrari and etc... is rubbish or Mr Driver is rubbish.

So does in martial arts, car is like the art you are performing e.g Karate, Kick boxing, Kung Fu and etc...
Racing driver is like martial artist who represent his or her chosen art.

In car, no matter how good is the car, if you put a bad driver, he or she will not win. Same in martial arts, no matter how good is the art, if you put a bad martial artist to perform or compete he or she will not win.

So it wouldn't be fair to say, Karate can not win Aikido and Aikido can not win Kung Fu and etc...
A good car needs a good driver and a good martial art system needs a good martial artist.

So rather focus on wining the fight, you have to win yourself first!

Bando Kick boxing (Lethwei) via Muay Thai Champion

This fight is under Myanmar Lethwei rules. Rules are: -1 time out -Fight goes to the ground the fight is reset on the feet -All strikes like headbutts, punches, kicks, knees, slam down with strikes legal -No pads no gloves, barenuckle only. - no judges, fight goes to draw if no KO. Description by BF1.

Myanmar Lethwei. Myanmar Traditional Boxing is a form of kickboxing which originated in Myanmar. Lethwei is in many ways similar to its siblings from neighboring South-East Asian countries such as Tomoi from Malaysia, Pradal Serey from Cambodia and Muay Thai from Thailand. If Thai Boxing is the science of 8 limbs, then Lethwei can be called the science of 9 limbs, due to the allowance of head butts. In comparison, Lethwei can be interpreted as being bolder and more extreme. Myanmar boxers are said to be slightly bigger and taller than their Thai counterparts. The techniques are a bit slower and stronger than in the other Southeast Asian kickboxing forms. There are records recording Lethwei style matches dating back to the Pyu Empire in Myanmar. Ancient Myanmar armies successfully used Lethwei, Bando and its armed sibling Banshay in winning many wars against neighboring countries. Participants fight without gloves or protection, wrapping only their hands in hemp or gauze cloth. Fights are traditionally held outdoors in sandpits instead of rings, but in modern times they are now held in rings. Popular techniques in Lethwei include leg kicks, knees, elbows, head butts, raking knuckle strikes, and take downs. Matches traditionally and ultimately would go until a fighter could no longer continue. In earlier times, there no draws, only a win or loss by knockout. No point system existed. Extreme bloodshed was very common and death in the ring was no surprise. Nowadays in the match, if a knockout occurs, the boxer is revived and has the option of continuing; as a result, defense, conditioning, and learning to absorb punishment are very important. Myanmar boxers spend a great deal of time preparing the body to absorb impact and conditioning their weapons to dish it out. Matches today are carried out in both the traditional manner and a more modern offshoot started in 1996, the Myanma Traditional boxing. The modern style has changed to make the contests more of an organized sport under the government's organization. It should be noted that the modern style of Myanma Traditional Boxing greatly resembles Muay Thai in its sporting outlook, and not quite the rougher and tumble fighting of its rural roots.

P.s It wouldn't be fair to say Muay Thai is weak compare to Bando Lethwei just because of this result, as we all know the quality is not about the art, but about the practitioners. Myanmar and Thai has long history of boxing, compete with strong opponents we both can learn from each others. If you want to be the best, you have to fight with the best.

Respect to all martial artists.

Chinese Freemasons and Kung Fu

The sodality of Freemasonry that evolved out of the European Enlightenment bears no resemblance, other than the name, to another society—one that finds its origins in Southern China. Styling itself in English as The Chinese Freemasons, this body might be better termed the Vast Family (Hongmen) or Fine Public Court (Chee Kong Tong).

As Chinese Freemasons developed in oversea, they also brought Hung Kuan Kung Fu with them.

Kung Fu Fitness kicks off on Isle of Dogs

Everybody could soon be kung fu fighting if an Isle of Dogs resident's martial arts classes take off.

Budding Bruce Lee's now have the chance to learn the martial arts at Kung Fu Fitness run in Burrell's Wharf by Aldrich Sawbwa.

Aldrich, 28, is keen for Wharfers to take it up the sport - whose best known exponent was 1970s film legend Lee - as a way of looking after themselves in more ways than one.

He said: "I want to help people get fit and learn practical self-defence at the same time. Kung fu is about both internal and external training. Outside it's the hands, the eyes and the body, but inside it's the heart, mind and spirit.

"Many people have an incorrect idea about kung fu. The philosophy is very simple, it's about making peace, not fighting. But what is important is you can apply the self-defence techniques very quickly.

"To perfect your kung fu you need to follow three steps - form, power and speed. It can be tough but I tell students there's no gain without pain, and most feel the benefit very quickly.

"The benefits are many, including improved self-esteem, better focus at work and at home, self-discipline, as well as self-defence.

"There are many stages to go through, and even when you reach the top level you can never stop improving."

Aldrich is originally from Burma and has been practising kung fu for over 20 years. He moved to London in February after living in Glasgow for several years, where he ran a similar school with great success. He's confident his Isle of Dogs venture will prove appealing as well.

He said: "What we offer here is different from anywhere else because we do a combination of kung fu and bando kick boxing. Bando is the Burmese form of kick boxing. Everyone knows about Thai boxing but this is even better. It uses the kukri knife, a traditional Burmese weapon, and is more aggressive."

If that sounds a bit too violent for some tastes then Kung Fu Fitness also offers more restrained martial arts including tai chi and yoga. Aldrich said: "We can tailor everything to individual requirements. It all depends on what someone wants to achieve, whether that's losing excess weight, increasing muscle, stress release or improving flexibility."

Tai chi classes take place at Burrell's Wharf in Westferry Road on Wednesdays, with the self-defence and kung fu at Docklands Settlements on Saturdays. Aldrich is also willing to arrange classes for businesses in Canary Wharf.

He said: "There are great benefits of learning martial arts for company employees. It can help improve concentration and fitness and lead to greater productivity, which is so important these days."

Both approaches have significant and well-researched health benefits even at an introductory level. Art of Speaking & Sparring

Speaking is like Sparring because you apply different techniques based on attacks and defences and you don't know what will come next, just like speaking your conversation is based on questions and answers. If you give the wrong answers or questions, you might upset or hurt the other person. You should know when to stop in speaking same in sparring, if you don't know what techniques to apply you might hurt yourself or others, without control in speaking or sparring both will get hurt in the end!

We are what we eat!

It is about building strong foundations a house is built on strong foundations to remain structurally sound for many years. By comparison an Athlete or fighter must also build a strong nutritional foundation and muscular fitness, strength and performance will follow.

Remember that to have a healthy diet, most people should be eating:
  • plenty of fruit and veg
  • plenty of starchy foods such as rice, bread, pasta (try to choose wholegrain varieties when you can) and potatoes
  • some protein-rich foods such as meat, fish, eggs and pulses
  • some milk and dairy foods
  • just a small amount of foods high in fat, salt and sugar
It's also important to eat a variety of foods to make sure we get all the nutrients our bodies need.

Kung Fu Panda Dance

Mindfulness of Breathing

As its name implies, the ‘Mindfulness of Breathing’ uses the breath as an object of concentration. By focusing on the breath one becomes aware of the mind’s tendency to jump from one thing to another. The simple discipline of concentration brings one back to the present moment and all the richness of experience that it contains. It is a way to develop mindfulness, the faculty of alert and sensitive awareness. And it is an excellent method for cultivating the states of intense meditative absorption known as dhyana. As well as this, the mindfulness of breathing is a good antidote to restlessness and anxiety, and a good way to relax: concentration on the breath has a positive effect on one’s entire physical and mental state.

The meditation has four progressive stages leading to a highly enjoyable level of concentration. To start with five minutes per stage is a good period of practice.

In the first stage you use counting to stay focused on the breath. After the out-breath you count one, then you breathe in and out and count two, and so on up to ten, and then you start again at one.

In the second stage you subtly shift where you breathe, counting before the in-breath, anticipating the breath that is coming, but still counting from one to ten, and then starting again at one.

In the third stage you drop the counting and just watch the breath as it comes in and goes out.

In the final stage the focus of concentration narrows and sharpens, so you pay attention to the subtle sensation on the tip of the nose where the breath first enters and last leaves the body.
