Martino Jose Scovachricchi Rodriguez is a saxophonist and composer. Born in San Jose, Costa Rica in 1983 and raised in Torino, Italy, Martino works extensively across the UK as a performing artist as a soloist, collaborating with gypsy quintet Tatcho Drom. He is currently recording his first album of original compositions entitled Melancolia Feliz. Winner of the Costa Rica Young Soloists competition in 2007, he has appeared as a soloist with the National Symphony Orchestra of Costa Rica and alongside international artists including drummer Peter Erskine and harpist Katrin Finch.
He is a dedicatee of new works by contemporary composers and has delivered world premiere performances in several venues in the UK and Italy, such as the South Bank Centre, Bolivar Hall and Teatro Regio of Torino. Martino has developed a solid repertory of both classical and contemporary music for saxophone, coupled with sound knowledge and experience of improvisation both in and outside the jazz context (free and gypsy music). Martino is also a very experienced educator running classical and gypsy workshops and master classes in the UK and Italy, and is part of the Ride for Good project, which was formed to explore music traditions from Berber (Amazigh) people in Morocco, developing a teaching path in schools and villages.
He is an alumnus of the Berklee College of music (2 Year Certificate), graduate of the Royal Academy of music (PGDip) and the Conservatorio G. Verdi of Torino (BMus). In addition to the saxophone, Martino also studies cello with Professor Dario Destefano working toward attainment of his second performance degree. He has been awarded scholarships from the DeSono Associazione per la Musica, the North American Scholarship, CRT Master dei Talenti, and Mosco Marener award.
Martino's playing and compositions reflect his pacific and creative soul, producing a unique and meditative sound. He believes that music, like meditation, helps one to become a better, more peaceful and patient person. Through the study of music many human qualities such as curiosity, creativity, inner calm, ability to communicate and listen are enhanced; significantly, music is the only art form in which vibrations directly affect the human soul and nervous system.
